How Does Virtualization Relate to Cloud Hosting?

In days gone by, servers were often setup to run a single application that served a number of people over a network. A web server might deliver information to company employees through an intranet, while another web server helped external users through the Internet. That model was a "one server, one application" design.

Cloud hosting and virtualization eliminate many of the limitations inherent in the traditional single server single application hosting model. First, a single server represents a single point of failure. If the server is down, it cloud affect thousands of potential customers leading to a drop in sales and profits. Even under ideal circumstances this design requires scheduled downtime for upgrades and maintenance.

Cloud hosting, on the other hand, is redundant by design. Hard drives or even entire servers in the cloud can fail without any impact on the availability of your server or application because the cloud automatically detects failures and reroutes the requests to another server within the cloud. Unfortunately setting up a cloud is an expensive venture not financially feasible for many small to medium businesses. Thankfully the pairing of cloud hosting with virtualization allows those businesses to share or rent a portion of a cloud.

Virtualization takes the physical resources of a single server - its central processor, memory and hard drives - and, with special software, causes that physical computer to act like several "virtual" computers. Each virtual computer can run a different application, even a different operating system: Windows in one virtual partition, VMware, Debian, Ubuntu or Red Hat Linux in another.

A special piece of virtualization software called a "hypervisor" controls and allocates resources to each virtual machine to assure smooth and reliable operation among operating systems and applications. A cloud hosting service provider can provide dozens, hundreds or even thousands of virtual servers without building hundreds or thousands of individual servers.

Instead of reliance on numerous individual servers the virtual servers tap into the virtually unlimited computing power of many very powerful servers grouped together via a network to form what is known as a cloud. New resources can be added to the cloud without downtime and servers within the cloud can be removed for upgrades or maintenance without users of the service even noticing.

As a remote user of cloud hosting the virtualization process is invisible to you. You simply connect via SSH, VNC, PC Anywhere, Telnet, FTP or another protocol and configure the server as you would a traditional physical server. Instances of servers can be backed up, duplicated, downgraded and upgraded with just a click without the downtime required to do the same procedures on a physical server.

3 Things for Finding the Right Web Hosting for Your Small Business

In these modern times, it is hard for a business to remain competitive without a website. Getting small business web hosting can provide you with a number of benefits and can potentially help a struggling business to survive these trying financial times or allow a thriving business to expand even further than you imagined possible. However, unless your small business happens to be a web hosting business, then there's a good chance that you really don't know what you should be looking for from a host. If you just leap at the first cheap deal you see, then there's a good chance you'll end up with a web host that doesn't meet your needs. If you look for these things, you'll greatly improve your odds of making the right decision.

  1. One of the biggest things you're going to want in a small business web hosting is easy to use design tools. You probably aren't going to want to invest the money in having a professional web master design your site for you. If the web host has convenient templates and lots of helpful applications, then you can easily build a very nice site on your own. You are going to want to specifically look for tools such as imbedded videos, easy uploading support, and a variety of templates which include shopping carts and payment methods. With those tools, even someone with zero web design experience can make an effective business website.

  2. Another really important feature you are going to want for a small business web hosting is both a domain name and email options. You don't want your customers going to a website that has an address that looks like someone's free hosting space from their internet service provider. It is essential that you get a domain name that represents your business well. Also, having email features is hugely helpful. Not only does it make it very easy for your customers to contact you, if you use things like mailing lists and RSS feeds, it becomes easy for you to contact your customers as well. This can help keep them up to date with what you are offering and will definitely improve sales.

  3. The third essential feature that you should look for in small business web hosting is 24/7 support. Even though a good set of design tools and tutorials can go a long ways towards letting even an inexperienced person make a great site, you may still need additional help, and you definitely want a host that will provide it. Also, once you get a site up and start reaping the benefits, the last thing you want is for it to go down and not be able to fix it. It is crucial that you find a host that will promptly help you fix things to get your business going again.

While choosing a small business web hosting seems like a big decision, if you do some homework first and research your options thoroughly, you will end up with a host that satisfies all your needs.

Our Small Business Web Hosting plans include a lot of features that you cannot pass up. Drop by our business hosting Australia website and make the most of it.

Dedicated Servers Are Probably The Best Choice For Hosting If Your Business Is Expanding

Once a business gets large enough, maintaining a website can become quite an arduous task. As the company grows, the site will start using more and more bandwidth, it will need more and more storage space, and it will need more and more customization and additional features. After a certain point, it is almost inevitable that a company will need to start looking into getting dedicated servers for their website.

What is a dedicated server? First, it would be easier to understand that there are three different types of web hosting available and they all have pros and cons. The cheapest type of hosting is shared web hosting. Shared hosting servers house hundreds of websites on each individual server. This is the most economical web hosting method, but it comes at a cost of performance. Next, there are VPSes (Virtual Private Servers). These bridge the gap between shared servers and dedicated servers. There are still multiple websites on the individual servers, but the resources are not shared. This allows higher performance, but at a more expensive cost and still less customization than dedicated servers. Finally, we have dedicated servers. They are the most expensive option, but every website gets its own individual server (or in some cases, cluster of servers).

Dedicated servers are more expensive than any other option, but this is for good reason. The are the most reliable, highest performance option when it comes to choosing a type of hosting. In addition, they are highly customizable. When there is only one website on a server, then it is easily modified, both on the hardware and software side as the changes don't have to be tested on every individual site. Businesses can choose and change the operating system as well as upgrade and modify the hardware as they see fit. In addition, they also have either unlimited bandwidth, or a very, very high amount of allotted bandwidth.

While having a your own server is quite an investment for a person or business serious about generating web traffic, it can pay dividends if used properly. High traffic websites can generate a significant amount of revenue either from direct sales or advertising. Unscheduled downtime, running out of bandwidth, or performance issues can absolutely destroy profit margins in regards to a professional website. With your own server, no one has to worry about other companies' websites using too much bandwidth, putting too much additional strain on the server hardware, or causing unexpected downtime. This can be a sigh of relief in the hectic world of business on the internet.

Web Hosting - It's Not Just A Spiders Party

If you are going to have a website, you have to have a web host. The host is not an arachnid but a computerized system that accesses your computer from a different location. The host provides space on their server to hold all of your website's information. Web hosting is a service that every Internet entrepreneur needs unless of course they happen to have their own server.

This unique service is a requirement and in fact, some web hosts offer several services that may be free or available at various price points based on the complexity of the services needed. Free services tend to be offered to individuals only. The cost for business will depend upon the size of the website and what the website requires to function correctly (automated graphics, videos, fill-in forms, etc.).

Since web hosting is a necessity, there are now a number of different companies who offer this service (JustHost.com, InMotionhosting.com or GoDaddy.com) and each one must be competitive with each other to stay in business. The Internet is constantly changing and so are the services that are provided; the hosts must stay at the edge of the current trends otherwise their customers will be moving to their competitor.

Although the various web hosting companies may have great advertisements, their services and performance is what you really need to be concerned with. When new Internet marketer's hit the scene, there is so much to learn and getting the wrong information can hurt in the wrong places. Taking time to consider what your needs are and match those up with a host is really the best way to make the best decision on who will be hosting your website. What should you look for?

Reputation - Seek out a company that has excellent reviews/testimonials. A great web hosting company will have a great deal of experience under their belt and then guarantee what they offer.

Guarantees- What does the company back up at 100%? If the company is worth anything, everything will be guaranteed. The company should stand behind their advertisements as well as their conditions. The company should be accountable and dependable.

Support - Technical as well as miscellaneous support should be available to you when you need it. Technical support should be open 24/7 via internet and telephone. The turnaround time to correct an issue should also be a consideration.

Back-up- This, as we all know, is a very important process to save data. The web hosting company should offer back-up services which should be allowed to be done daily. This protects your data and secures your website in case your site does go down.

Options - We all love options because this allows flexibility and things do change. When changes happen options can make great solutions. Having access to some type of back office or control panel so that you have access and control over certain tasks such as managing FTP users, checking reports on bandwidth or viewing system performance are helpful to determine that your site is getting what it needs to perform from the host.

Finding the right host may take a little time but in the end, this amount of time will be worth it to you. Web hosting is a serious business and having the best web host possible will reflect in the success of your online business.

Why Go for FTP File Hosting

One of the greatest milestones in the world of information technology is the Internet. The Internet has allowed people from all around the world to share all kinds of information, first through email, and now, through various methods of file sharing, one of which includes FTP file hosting sites. From videos, audios, software files, to documents, whether you want to store or share it, you can do so.

A number of websites now offer to store data/files onto their servers; these sites are known as FTP storage hosting sites. Additionally, these sites also allow a person to share these stored files to a number of Internet users via their site.

Although there are a number of disadvantages associated with FTP file hosting sites, its advantages and benefits far outweigh it. One greatest advantage of using FTP storage is the files' accessibility. You don't have to worry of losing important files and data. For as long as you have internet access, you can always store and share files as the need arises. The ease of accessibility will help you become more efficient when sharing your files because FTP storage makes it a lot easier for both the sending and receiving party.

Another advantage of using an FTP file hosting site for storing your files is the convenience. While other individuals carry external drives or USB flash devices to store vital information, you won't have to do so because everything you need is stored on the site. With just a few clicks, you can access and send it to anybody you like.

If you've chosen a good FTP storage hosting site, this will prove to be useful as it will serve as your backup site. You won't be in constant worry if you're forgetful or when your computer is infected with a virus so long as you have your important files stored in the file hosting site. You won't have to worry when storing files in these sites too because your files will be safe and secure.

Whether you want to store information and data for personal or business use, you can check the web for some of the best FTP file hosting sites. Some FTP storage sites are free, while offering you an option to upgrade to a premium account. This account means that you have to pay for file storage but restrictions found in free sites won't be imposed. Before paying a price for anything, make sure to look for the most suitable one for your needs.

Choose the Dedicated Server Hosting For Your Needs

Dedicated hosting can be defined as a type of internet hosting in which an organizational entity purchases or leases a separate server machine for a single purpose or running a set of related organizational systems. It should be noted that not all servers are dedicated. In some networks a single machine can act as a server for a specific purpose and perform other functions as well.

The machine 'performing' multiple functions at a time is termed 'shared server', where a single server machine is used by many different organizational entities. Though both have their own merits and demerits the dedicated server option is considered to be more flexible as it provides full control over the server machine.

Dedicated server can be used as an option in presence of following factors:

All those websites who receive high traffic
Just need to be alone on the server (not shared with anyone) due to any reasons mainly catering to each organization's requirements

Availability

Dedicated servers options are available very commonly these days. There are hundreds of companies on the internet which advertise their hosting services in multiple ways. However, collectively speaking most of these offerings highlight following features:

Platform
Processor specifications
Bandwidth specifications
Disk space
Memory
Managed Backups
Security Specifications
Price

While most of the solution-providers offer off-the-rack solutions focusing mainly on economic viability of the package, there are sites specifically designed for the customer to configure his / her own solutions to the last detail. However, there are cost considerations with each additional or higher option that the customer selects. These solutions are mostly charged on a monthly basis but quite a few solution providers offer monthly rates as well while a few offer the flexibility of selecting the payment mode on a preferred basis like hourly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually.

Management

The role of the dedicated server providers in the management of the same is still not standardized as such. This statement implies that each dedicated server provider will use the industry terms as per its own interpretation with an underlying string of common practices. Server management can include several areas like:

OS, Application and other software updates,
Monitoring of hardware resources and application performance,
Provision of security services like firewalls, antivirus, security audits, DDos protection and mitigation and intrusion detection
Backup Management
Disaster Recovery
Performance related services like load balancing and database tuning and administration
User Management

The provision of all these services can be categorized in four different ways:

Fully Managed

In this option every aspect of server management is performed by the service provider and customer is completely hands-off. The services include server monitoring, software updates, reboots, software patches and OS upgrades.

Managed

In this option customer may perform some particular tasks and the duties of the service provider are limited to the medium level of management, monitoring, updates, and a limited amount of support

Self Managed

This option emphasizes that customer performs most of the operations and tasks on dedicated server while the job of the service provider is limited to regular monitoring and some maintenance.

Unmanaged

There is virtually no involvement from service provider. Customer has the responsibility to provide all maintenance, upgrades, patches, and security.

Security

Security is an extremely significant consideration in provision of dedicated server management. Service providers have to employ stringent security measures that the application and data stored on their network of servers remain safe from the attack of any intrusions, spamming techniques and other harmful problems like Trojans, worms and crashers. Every OS uses different software for security implementations.

Magento Optimized Shared Web Hosting

Magento optimized hosting is ideal for the small site or business owner, who wants to effectively manage his properties online. Many prefer this type of shared hosting when they are in the early stages of building traffic and experiencing growth, but not to the extent of needing a dedicated or even virtual private server (VPS). The Magento optimized plan often means a reduction in overselling. What this means for the average user is that he does not end up paying a fortune for a lot of features that he will never use or need. Most Magento optimized plans set the standard at 2,500 MB of web storage and 25 GB in monthly data transfer. What this means to the entity is that they will be able to handle the daily boon of traffic and growth without the site toppling under the weight of its own success.

Unlimited email accounts are also offered on the Magento optimized plans, and they are available in a number of different formats, including POP3, SMTP, IMAP, and Webmail, so one may ultimately be the author of how he communicates with his staff and how they are able to communicate with each other and with their readership. Webmail is often the most attractive option for businesses large and small because it means being able to access viable email accounts from any computer in the world. Most Magento plans, though, will allow one a combination depending on preferences.

Magento optimized shared hosting does not limit one's capabilities to expand either. With additional domain names and the ability to park domains, it becomes possible for one to build on their web revenue and turn a hobby into a way of life. Sometimes it just isn't feasible to work on more than one web entity at a time, and most who make their living online do so through multiple streams of revenue, making this an attractive option for the Internet entrepreneur, who is wanting to grow his business a little at a time.

For those doing business on personal computers, another excellent option is the spam and antivirus protection that the Magento plan comes with. Because it is difficult to stay on top of all of the developing changes in Internet security, it is helpful to the small startup, who often makes a good target for Internet predators to align with a plan that protects them and their real estate.

With all the reasons to sign up for a Magento optimized plan, it is important that one takes advantage of the deals that are out there. Because taking one's web business to the next level is what makes one successful, Magento shared hosting just makes sense. If you are ready to expand, then consider signing up today.

Web Hosting Selection, Not an Unlimited Option

While searching for a web host, you've undoubtedly come across offers for unlimited bandwidth and disk space for insanely low prices, sometimes as low as $1.00 a month. As the old saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. So it is with web hosting.

There are several things one must be concerned when choosing a web host. You need to answer three primary questions before you begin the process of choosing a host.

Firstly, how much space do you need for your site itself. This is the amount of disk space all your website files will occupy. Generally websites occupy significantly less space than what a host will offer. Unless you have large files such as videos, images, or downloadable programs, or a huge database you will likely need less than 100MB of disk space.

Secondly, you need to determine how much traffic your web site will have. This relates directly to your bandwidth needs. Again, if you have video, picture galleries, or any other large downloadable content your bandwidth needs increase accordingly. A reasonably busy website without any streaming video or other large bandwidth content will use about 150MB of bandwidth a day. That isn't just a tiny three page site, that would be a full site with web graphics, lots of content and more. The catch with bandwidth is does a host measure inbound and outbound data, and yes, there are hosts who only count outbound data.

Thirdly, and this is the part I call peripheral needs, you must determine how many email addresses, forwarders, parked and add-on domains, and databases you will need as well as what technologies your website requires. Some sites will need.ASP and MSSQL, which means they need Windows hosting, and some will need PHP, PERL, and MySQL so they would require Linux hosting for best results although it could run on Windows.

Once you know the answers to these questions, and there are many forums that can help you answer them if you need help, it is time to start looking for a host.

Above all, you want your website to work, and work fast. When you use shared hosting, you're already using resources that are allocated among numerous users. As long as everyone's a good neighbor, there usually isn't much of a problem. But what happens when a host offers unlimited hosting, without actually having the resources to back it up? Most of the time, that's what happens. The hosting company itself is almost always limited to certain resources, and they offer unlimited resources to their customers in the hopes that only a few customers will actually call them on it.

When a host allocates unlimited bandwidth and disk space without having the resources to back it up, that could result in a serious problem for you and your site. All it takes is one site to enjoy a huge amount of popularity, or consume an outrageous amount of disk space, and your site is adversely affected, maybe to the point of being inaccessible to your customers.

What, then, are the priorities? Above all, you want a host who has the resources on hand. You also want a host who does not oversell. What that means is that each server that they run is limited in the number of clients that go on that machine, in harmony with disk space and bandwidth limitations. If a host doesn't oversell, then each client will be able to run their sites in harmony with one another. On the other hand, if a host does oversell, sites will slow to a crawl, and more than one customer could find that they don't have the amount of disk space that they thought they did, or even worse, they may not be able to access their website. And if they can't access their website, their visitors can't either.

By no means is shared hosting a bad thing. However, it becomes a bad thing if the host is irresponsible and oversells its resources. A responsible host will, when a server starts to fill up with clients, configure a new server to place clients on. We here at PalladiumHosting.net don't oversell, and we invite you to try to host your site the Palladium way. We think you'll be quite satisfied, and more to the point, you'll get the bandwidth and disk space that you pay for. And if within 30 days you aren't completely satisfied, we'll give you your money back.

Dedicated Servers, Cloud Servers, Colocation - Can You Go Green?

The Law, Green servers and the bottom line.

One of the big issues facing our industry is the pressure to go green. In fairness I use the word "pressure" in the loose kind of way simply because in actuality at the moment Green costs more and if something costs more shareholders and company directors don't like it. In America up until recently a company could actually get sued by shareholders are doing something that could be seeing detrimental to the bottom line. That does seem a bit harsh, and I'm glad that they now have changed it to enable company directors and CEOs to make greener decisions that may affect profit margins. However I think we're looking at the wrong question here, what we should be looking for is the solution where going green doesn't cost more.

Is the internet green? is a Yellow Pages wasteful?

People talk about how things like telephone directories like Yellow pages are non-ecological and it seems obviously much more green to search on the Internet. Actually how true is this? Google, Yahoo and Bing all have servers running 24 hours a day seven days a week in hot places like Palo Alto and California where he need for air conditioning is much higher than the power consumption is compounded by the use of cooling. This consumes a huge amount of electricity... a telephone directory does not need to be plugged into the electricity. It is interesting currently there is a lot of directory bashing going on... (mainly buy new directory replacement websites I might add) but think about it once it is made. it lasts a year and sits on the sideboard next to the telephone. All of us in the industry are keeping very quiet about how un-green your average search on Google is... (the same way Starbucks is keeping very quiet about the detrimental effects of caffeine- but at least you have the choice of decaffeinated...) Of course we're never going back in that direction the idea that the phone directory will still be around in five or 10 years is A complete fallacy.

Decaffeinated servers

it is really an issue of supply and demand like many things... it looks like it's down to straight economics, but sometimes it boils down to the sheer lack of choice. The public and corporations are keeping so much more data in the cloud these days.... and companies like us who furnish them with a dedicated server space that they need are really stuck in the middle. People do want greener servers... the issue is not that greener servers are unavailable... lets face it a server more or less is a server apart from innovations in low power processing. And to be fair as an IT Department you can make the choice to invest in them...but really it is an issue for the power providers and central government.

Green electricity the question really is why is there such a lack of choice of green power? And then when it is available why, if the government says it wants to be green, is it so much more expensive?

Debbi Cole Has worked in the IT industry for eight years and specifically for Server Space for 5 years. She is a keen advocate of cloud hosting, cloud servers and Green data centre issues.

Debbi was a keen motorcycle enthusiast but has since given it up for the safer pass time of Yacht racing although both the weather and professional commitments severely restrict her opportunity to pursue this pass-time.

Get To Know The Usage Limitation Of Unlimited Web Hosting Plan

In the world of the Internet, you will often hear talk of unlimited web hosting and usage. This term originates from the fact that in the early days of the World Wide Web, there were usage restrictions for which a company could be charged extra if they exceeded the limit. After a while, hosting companies started to loosen their restrictions to prevent nasty surprises for their clients when it came time for billing. Today, the concept of unlimited hosting is still used in many circles as a sales pitch. Unfortunately, many hosting companies don't stand behind what they promise. Here are some things that you need to watch out for when you get ready to sign on with a provider:

Unlimited isn't unlimited at all. Companies are starting to put more restrictions on the amount of bandwidth they allow you to use. These limitations are a result of chronic overuse and an attempt to ration the room that is available nationwide. There are two types of companies to work with when it comes to rationing Internet. On the one hand, you will have hosts that are honest and upfront about it. They won't advertise unlimited access in their sales materials, and they will make sure that you are aware of your limitations. While the value of honesty should not go unnoticed, it can be limiting if you have bigger plans for your site. The other type of company will advertise unlimited use, but their "unlimited" consists of 200MB on the low end to 3GB on the high end.

Other companies will play the unlimited usage thing by ear. Some will offer the service as long as your usage doesn't get past a certain point. These companies enjoy the flexibility to provide their customers true unlimited service within reason. With companies such as these, limitations only arise for chronic overuse. The good thing about these companies is that you will rarely if ever use more bandwidth than you need. It takes a lot of traffic for you to get past the 3GB guideline, but if you manage to do it, you could be cut off from further use until the next billing cycle, or you could be charged by the megabyte in which case things could get expensive in a hurry.

Before you sign up with any web hosting provider, you need to be knowledgeable about what exactly you are getting yourself in to regarding terms of use. It always pays to read and understand your rights before moving forward with an agreement. Unlimited may not always mean unlimited, and it is up to you to know the limitations that may be waiting for you around the bend in order to avoid any unwanted surprises.
