Website Hosting Review Sites - Do They Make a Choice Easier?

If you use a search engine to look for website hosting review sites the result will be several pages of sites, many offering their choice of top 10 hosting providers. You might think that this would be helpful but in fact it tends to confuse because there is no consistency in the information presented.

Whilst many review sites list many of the same hosting companies, the order is often different. In some cases, however, a hosting company that tops some lists is absent all together from others. In addition it is often difficult to compare reviews as the aspects of the service considered may be different.

So, are these websites providing their own independent assessment or are they biased by a connection with the hosting providers? Some sites are independent and are well worth a visit for example webhostingtalk.com (you may also be able to get advice here if you have specific requirements). On the other hand many sites are run by affiliate marketers who get a commission from the hosting company for sales they introduce. There is nothing wrong with this (such sites can provide good information) providing they state this and do not claim to be independent.

At the end of the day the problem with hosting review sites is that having looked at lots of them you can still end up confused. However, at least you will have learned who are the well known names in the market. At that point the best way forward is to do your own research i.e. look for independent user feedback, remembering that people are always more likely to complain than praise, and balance this against price.

My own experience is that however much research you do you can never be sure that you will not experience problems. There is therefore always going to be an element of trial & error so I would recommend looking for a well known company that offers a money back guarantee. You can then set-up your site and if all is well - great. If not you can get your money back and try again.
